Welcome to GreaseU!

Welcome to Grease University. (GreaseU)  Are you ready to learn all about running vegetable oil as an alternative fuel?

Start with the lesson below that meets your current skill level.  You'll be a "Greaser" before you know it!

Already know how it works?
If you want a great video on how to convert your car yourself, click here to see a clip from Rob del Bueno's "Veg My Ride" DVD.

The Basics

Lesson 1: How does a car engine work?
In this first lesson, you will learn how an internal combustion engine works.  Both gasoline and diesel engines are internal combustion engines.  If you are already mechanically inclined, you may want to jump to lesson 2.  However, this tutorial will often fill in the gaps for a "shade tree" mechanic.  This lesson takes you to the "How Stuff Works" website for their tutorial.  When you are finished, close the window and you should return here automatically.  Time for Lesson 2.

Lesson 2: How does a Diesel Engine work?
Learn how a diesel engine creates energy with compression ignition.  This is the first building block in understanding how it can use vege-table oil as fuel.  This lesson will take you to the "How Stuff Works" site for their great tutorial on diesel engines.  When you're done, just close the window and you should be back here and ready for your next lesson!

Intermediate Lessons

Lesson 3: What does it take to burn your french fries?
This lesson will help you understand how to make vegetable oils combust in a diesel engine.  It will lay the groundwork for helping you to understand what you will need to convert your vehicle to vegetable oils.

Lesson 4: Putting together all of the pieces.
This lesson will show you where to get all of the pieces to build your own conversion.  It will also discuss sources of pre-packaged kits of varying complexity from the Do-It-Yourselfer (DIY) kit to "kits" for the Mechanic.

Lesson 5: Now where do I get my veggie oil? (ie. Advanced Dumpster Diving)
This lesson will help you put together a plan on how to source Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO).  It will also help with identifying good oil vs. bad oil.

Lesson 6: Preparing the waste oil to use as fuel
This lesson will discuss how to properly filter and dewater waste oil before using it in your diesel engine.

Lesson 7: Updated Research on Dewatering and Filtering your oil
This lesson has the latest research on the methods I am using to filter and dewater oil.
